On single-sex school, bikinis and decision-making

Research says single-sex schools help children thrive.

It says boys, particularly, have trouble paying attention in class, and often ignore instructions and generate sloppy work. Among the reasons, the article concludes, are more female teachers (than male teachers), superior female student counterparts (girls read faster and control their emotions better), and unfit educational structure.

An alum of both types of schools myself, I fairly agree with the argument, but am not sure about the details - perhaps because the article refers to U.S. education. (Shoot! There was also literally no girl in most of my Mechanical Engineering classes.)

To me, the boys of single-sex schools can practically say "there is one less thing to worry or think about". Thus they can more freely express their feelings and actions.

Most of which are usually deemed unmannered.

What are other potential advantages? Well, they can benefit through better decision makings.

What?

Well, there's this research that scientifically demonstrated that bikinis make man stupid, that sexy images rob male brain of ability to make wise decisions. The paper is formally titled "Bikinis Instigate Generalized Impatience in Intertemporal Choice".

How will this benefit the students? While there shouldn't be any bikinis at school, I'd say that you never know what's in young men's mind... or what they can imagine. For single-sex school students, at least this imagination part is eliminated or 'constrained'.

The experiments must be like torture to the 358 young men
subjects.

Read this: "In one test, the men looked at images of women in bikinis or lingerie and at images of landscapes. In another, some men were given T-shirts to handle and assess while others were given bras. Another batch of men was assigned to watch a commercial featuring men running over landscapes while other guys watched a video of “hundreds of young women, dressed in bikinis running across hills, fields and beaches.” (No word on whether they used “Baywatch” slo-mo)."

How valid is this research? If concentrating itself is difficult, let alone making decisions, then the research must be quite valid.

Take an example from my friend, at his previous company.

One of his best technicians was fixing a pump when a female employee with sizeable yet well-proportioned boobs (that's how he explained to me) passed by. Without realizing it, the technician let his fingers cut (but did not require amputation) in the pump. Recordable accident.

In manufacturing environment (in any environment, in fact) it's a big deal. But you know what the technician said?

"It's OK. It's worth it."

Prospectus - friends with benefits

In case you haven't heard, the term friends with benefits refers to two individuals (friends, as the term implies) who mutually and regularly engage in sexual activity without any aspirations of anything more than just sex. How does it compare to the traditional relationship? The prospectus below provides the answer. :)

(Found this on Yes, I Can't See You)

Holy cow!

This term is not considered to be very popular among teenagers, and most teens claim it is definitely not a very popular phrase. (wikipedia)

Whatever.

But seriously, holy cow! I didn't write (and read) any blogs for the past four weeks. I guess I'm neither a blogoholic nor a blogophile. The truth is, a lot happened and I just naturally decided not to get close to any blog-related activities. It kinda felt good, though :)

Business planning
This was the root cause, definitely. Somehow Asia Pacific region does their business plan just at the start of the 2nd half. Ridiculously way too early. No wonder it has never been accurate. But you know Asians, they like to put a bit too much in their pockets. Anyway, I probably spent too much time given the craps our business partners put in. At the end, though, it seemed to be a big win for Malaysia.

Single life
This has also become a once-a-year routine, during the kids' school holiday in July-August. This year's highlight was sweeping the floor. Having not done it for so long, I found it very difficult to clean just an apartment unit. The area I just swept instantly got dirty again! I felt like Tom, with Jerry kept teasing me... I could've thought about checking the sweeping technique.

24
Finished season 5 and season 6. I feel like I know Jack Bauer inside out.

Negaraku rap
I'm pretty sure tons of blogs out there talked about this short clip by a Malaysian student in Taiwan. I wonder how most Indonesians will react if this was done to Indonesia Raya...

When everybody knows your name
I didn't do much cooking during this period. Two places I visited frequently for the take-away food were Burger King and SOULed OUT - their pizzas are good! Towards the third and fourth visits, the servers and I were like buddies. Well, I doubt they really know my name, but it has reached a different 'level' in my limited social life. To me SOULed OUT is now among places like Prambors Cafe (used to be in Blok M), Champions Cafe (was in Kemang), and O'Hara (this is where RIF used to play) in Bandung. The first two are now history, physically. Not sure about O'Hara...

Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name,
And they're always glad you came;
You want to be where you can see,
Our troubles are all the same;
You want to be where everybody knows your name.
(Cheers)

Business, not results
Spent an evening with a colleague from Thailand and we agreed that the reason we exist in a corporate is to deliver business, not only results...

Fantasy football and Premiere League
New season has started at Yahoo!Fantasy Sports.

IKEA ads
Tidy up! Some hilarious commercials from IKEA.

Gwen Stefani
Gwen Stefani stopped by in KL, the last city in her Sweet Escape Asian tour, despite protests from student groups in Malaysia, claiming that "the concert would clash with local values". What a great performance from Gwen, and totally different audience (much better than the ones at MLTR's concert)! Most importantly, I feel much, much younger... :)

The best of the best

Norman Hubbard of Soccernet.com selected a football (soccer) team from the top two in the English Premiere League: Manchester United and Chelsea. See interesting read on the side bar.

His choices were: Cech (Chelsea); Neville (Manchester United), Carvalho (Chelsea), Vidic (Manchester United), Evra (Manchester United); Ronaldo (Manchester United), Essien (Chelsea), Lampard (Chelsea), Giggs (Manchester United); Drogba (Chelsea), Rooney (Manchester United)

As a Manchester United fan (and trying to be as objective as possible), I think he got it quite right. I would consider Scholes to replace Essien, but Scholesy didn't start the season excellently.

If these are the selection for fantasy football on Yahoo!, the team score today would be only 2711 (3295 if everyone plays all 34 games). Current leader is 3494.

Cech - 201 (17 games)
Neville - 159 (24)
Evra - 161.5 (22)
Carvalho - 206.5 (30)
Vidic - 120.5 (24)
Lampard - 399.5 (34)
Essien - 135 (30)
Ronaldo - 464 (31)
Giggs - 223.5 (27)
Rooney - 303 (31)
Drogba - 338 (34)

[TT]

There are many Yahoo! fantasy footballers with "[TT]" in their team names, including some of the best teams (i.e. top 50). Well, TT stands for Team Talk. It's a website forum where "experts" in fantasy football share their opinions. The rest, like me, would just try to digest these opinions and get the best out of it.

Teamtalk was created with the intention of providing a comfortable place for people with a common interest in Fantasy Football, Primarily (but not exclusively) Yahoo Fantasy Football and Football itself to meet, exchange ideas, share information and enjoy each other's company.

It has two types of memberships: regular and Elite. As an Elite member (which I'm not), you can get the access to the TT Elite forum, estimate team points using BBC stats, plan ahead with access to simple YFF schedules, and many more.

The rest of the forums are pretty similar to what people throw in YFF, except TT manages the forum much better. This includes fixture information, team news, suspensions & injuries, etc.

Yahoo! Fantasy Football

Here's the thing I've been doing week-in, week-out from August until May since 2000: Yahoo! Premiership Fantasy Football. I just checked my Fantasy profile, it's not that bad! Although my overall rank (out of all the teams registered) has been going down, 99% in 2001 to 98% last season (2005), it's been a great achievement as the number of participants has also grown up exponentially (not proven). What's been consistent is my performance in the private league. Champions in the league of friends, and top four in the private league of Indonesian players - for five years in a row. Despite my hate of the Gooners, I would choose Thierry Henry as the best player in the league - though it comes with the highest price as well.
